Astoria Financial Corporation is the unitary savings and loan association holding company for Astoria Federal Savings and Loan Association (Astoria Federal) and its consolidated subsidiaries. The Companys principal business is the operation of its wholly owned subsidiary, Astoria Federal. In addition to directing, planning and coordinating the business activities of Astoria Federal, the Company invests primarily in mortgage-backed securities, United States government and federal agency securities and other securities. Astoria Federals primary business is attracting retail deposits from the general public and investing those deposits, together with funds generated from operations, principal repayments on loans and securities and borrowed funds, primarily in one- to four-family mortgage loans, mortgage-backed securities, multi-family mortgage loans and commercial real estate loans. It also invests in construction loans and consumer and other loans.
