WellPoint Health Networks Inc. (WellPoint) is a managed healthcare company. As of December 31, 2002, WellPoint had approximately 13.2 million medical members and approximately 48.1 million specialty members. Through its subsidiaries, the Company offers a broad spectrum of network-based managed care plans to the large and small employer, individual, Medicaid and senior markets. The Companys managed care plans include preferred provider organizations (PPOs), health maintenance organizations (HMOs) and point-of-service (POS) and other hybrid plans and traditional indemnity plans. In addition, the Company offers managed care services, including underwriting, actuarial services, network access, medical management and claims processing. In September 2003, the Company merged with Cobalt Corporation, a health insurer.
