U.S. consumer sentiment fell to 85.3 in mid-May, according to the University of Michigan. This is the lowest level of the index since March 2003. Economists were expecting 88.0. The current conditions index fell to 103.3, the lowest level since December 2003. The expectations index declined to 73.7, the lowest since March 2003.

WTO selects new chief:

This time former European Union trade commissioner Pascal Lamy is involved in severe competition with veteran Uruguayan trade diplomat Carlos Perez del Castillo.
