New home sales rose more than 9.3% to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1.226 million in February , according to the Commerce Department. Economists were expecting a small increase to about 1.15 million.

New orders for durable goods rose 0.3% in February from revised 1.1% decline in January, according to the Commerce Department. Economists were expecting 0.8%. Excluding autos, durable goods fell 0.2%.

U.S. weekly jobless claims rose 3,000 to 324,000 for the week ending March 19, according to the Labor Department. The four-week average of new claims rose by 3,500 to 321,750.
