The US third-largest bank in assets J.P. Morgan Chase & Co. said it would follow the demand from ecological activists and the company’s shareholders and would adopt guidelines that restrict its lending and underwriting practices for the industry projects that are under scrutiny over possible damage to the environment.
An environmental policy for the New York-based bank is expected to be issued Monday, according to the Wall Street Journal. The bank’s loan reviews will impact some major plants and other big polluters, the policy about global warming will say.
The banks is also having an option to be involved in some steps towards lobbying the US government to adopt a national policy on greenhouse-gas emissions – the move hardly expected from the bank.
Banks like J.P. Morgan, Citigroup Inc. and Bank of America Corp. appeared under pressure from the ecology groups now after the groups failed to have any influence on the Bush administration in restricting oil drilling and other environmental issues.
