A Quarter Of UK Purchases Will Be Online By 2009

By 2009, one-quarter of all retail purchases in the UK will be made online, versus one in 24 at present, according to the UK retailers’ association, Interactive Media Retail Group. About Ђ120 billion will be spent via the Internet or mobile phone in that year, compared to this year’s predicted figure of Ђ25 billion (Stg 16.9 billion), which represents 6.1 per cent of total sales, versus 4.2 per cent in 2002. The Ђ120 billion in online sales expected in 2009 compares with a predicted total retail sales figure of Ђ477 billion, with Visa recently confirming UK-based Internet users to be spending almost twice as much online now, as in 2003. Improved payment systems and consumer confidence are fueling the boom in eCommerce, according to IMRG, which reveals online retailers to be refocusing their efforts on customer retention strategies. Visa, for its part, reports its UK cardholders to have spent Stg 1.8 billion online in Q4, 2003, up 91 per cent over the same period in 2002. UK grocery chain, Tesco, is also recording sustained online sales after selling more than Stg 500 million worth of goods online in 2003, and achieving as many sales in December 2003, as for the full year 1998, when total online sales rose by 50 per cent during the Christmas period. Visa cardholders in the UK and Spain bought 28 per cent more online in Q4 2003 than in Q4 in 2002, while cardholders in France and Germany bought 40 per cent more online. By contrast, Eurobarometer indicates that EU consumers have not taken to Internet shopping, with just 16 per cent having bought online. Of the more than 16,000 EU citizens profiled by Eurobarometer, 83 per cent had yet to make an online purchase, 28 per cent were not interested in buying online, and 7 per cent did not have a credit card. One in four who did not shop online, meanwhile cited security as a primary reason for not doing so.
