Debit Card Payments At Winn-Dixie Hit By Glitch
US grocery retailer, Winn-Dixie, which operates 1,070 stores in 12 states, has experienced a debit card processing glitch that affected PIN-secured debit transactions initiated at its stores. Customers whose debit cards were hit by the glitch, thought to be at one of the retailer’s third-party payment processors, would have been double-charged for the transactions, but all unauthorized charges or bounced checks will be refunded. Other high-profile retailers recently experiencing similar glitches include Florida grocery chain, Publix Supermarkets, and Wal-Mart Stores, in early April, both of which attracted much publicity.
Winn-Dixie believes its card processing issue originated from a communications problem with a debit card network, according to a news release. The retailer accepts Star, Pulse, NYCE and Interlink PIN-secured debit card payments, and relies on several third-party processors. While any incorrect debit charges were to be reversed within 24-36 hours of Winn-Dixie’s news release, the retailer was also advising customers to check their statements. By posting consumer alerts in its stores and on its website the day after the incident, Winn-Dixie followed similar consumer notification procedures to those used by Publix.
