Dan Rather, CBS News anchor, stepped down as a leading newsman for the company after more than 40 years of work. Bob Schieffer is named as his successor and a “new face” for evening news.
On Wednesday, Rather told his viewers that he wished courage to soldiers, sailors and journalists in harm’s way; to tsunami and other natural disaster victims, and to all those oppressed by financial burdens or failing health.
With his ouster a real era of news finished. "When I walk down the street, I want people to say, there goes a real reporter," he said about himself.
He really was the center of every single story of his. His last broadcast as anchor of "The CBS Evening News" showed that he is a real journalist, experienced and guided by foresight.
He also thanked the past and present professionals at CBS News and said it was great honor to work side by side with them for all those years.
He probably will not regret the ouster as the memories of days delighted with tension always remain.
Bob Schieffer, Veteran Washington correspondent, will be the new face of the "CBS Evening News."
"Many of you have known and trusted me over the years. I take that as a high compliment and I promise you this: I’ll never take that trust for granted," said Schieffer.
