The Santa Clara County Superior Court jury ordered Toshiba Corp. to pay $465 million in damages to Lexar Media Inc.
Lexar, the US digital equipment company, accused Toshiba of stealing trade secrets from the company.
On Wednesday, Toshiba was ordered to pay $381 million to Lexar for compensatory damages. On Thursday, the jury said Toshiba must pay $84 million in punitive damages to Lexar.
Earlier, Luxar sought compensation of $1 billion or more from the world’s seventh-largest chip maker.
The sum of $465 million is 10% higher than the company’s estimated net profit for the year ending next Friday.
"It is close to a half a billion dollars. I think that gets their attention," juror Greg Carter said.
