Chinese textile exports to be overall limited

Peter Mandelson, Europe’s trade commissioner, on Wednesday declared the possibility for imposing import boundaries on Chinese-made textile if the surge its exports brings some danger to European manufacturing process.
Mandelson cleared out limits of the Chinese export increase, exceeding which will automatically mean the EU’s intention to take certain measures to protect Europe’s domestic producers. According to the guidelines, increase of 10 % could force the EU to action.
China’s Ministry of Commerce declared that it is strongly against the European Union’s new guidelines issued to impose limitations on its textile products import saying they do not comply with WTO rules and the EU’s free trade principles, according to a report published Thursday on the ministry’s Web site.
The concerns of the Chinese are easy to understand especially while the U.S. is close to taking the same limiting measures. On Wednesday, U.S. industry and labor groups requested the government to re-impose quotas on 14 categories of clothing to protect American producers from Chinese imports. The applicants promised that they would send more petitions in order to reach the goal.
