EU and US want negotiations to continue

EU officials expressed Sunday their willingness to proceed negotiations with the United States, beyond the deadline set for the April 11, to settle an issue over subsidies to Boeing and Airbus.

Both parties seem eager to avoid legal proceedings at the World Trade Organization though both with certain requisitions.

"We hope it will be possible to continue negotiation. It is of course open for both the EU and the U.S. ... to refer the matter to the WTO. But in our opinion this is better avoided," said Simon Fraser, head of European Trade Commissioner Peter Mandelson’s cabinet.

The United States stated on Friday that it would be forced to turn to its case against the EU at the WTO if the union’s members approved a new round of government subsidies for Airbus.

In its turn, the EU declared its intention not to sacrifice Airbus launch-aid unless US provides a balanced reduction in Boeing’s support including federal contracts for different programs.

Boeing lost the reputation of the world’s largest manufacturer of big commercial jets in 2003 being left behind by Airbus. Meanwhile, two world’s biggest aircraft producers fight in severe competition lobbying their newest products: Airbus’s A350 and Boeing’s regional jet 787.
