EU considers imposing curbs on Chinese textiles

European Union Trade Commissioner Peter Mandelson will consider limiting imports of nine categories of Chinese textiles to protect producers in Europe.
Yesterday, Brussels released data showing a "dramatic" surge in imports of Chinese textile products to the European Union totalling €1.1bn.
The EU started an investigation which can lead to safeguard measures taken to limit Chinese textile imports.
However, Peter Mandelson remarked that the EU’s preference is not to impose sanctions which can put at risk friendly relations with Europe’s leading trade partners but to urge China take voluntary action to restrain its exports.
Despite the fact that France was one of the most aggressive proponents of the EU sanctions, Mr Raffarin, France’s Prime minister, said on Saturday he had "the deep feeling that China is a responsible actor in the world economy".
The issue seems to be also acute in the US, where the administration recently launched a similar investigation but traders have launched lawsuits demanding to impose curbs.
In an effort to ease contradictions with its major trading partners, China has already levied self-imposed taxes on some of its textile exports.
