Microsoft Corp. and SAP will join their efforts in designing a new product in the framework of their 15-year partnership, the tycoons announced on Tuesday.
The new product, code-named "Mendocino," will link together Microsoft’s Office applications and SAP’s business planning software, allowing customers to avoid spending time on duplicated data entries.
The Microsoft-SAP’s project is a "call for action" for their closest rivals International Business Machines Corp. and Oracle Corp., said Yvonne Genovese, an analyst at Gartner. Other enterprise software companies will find themselves in need of collaboration and even merging in order to satisfy the requirement of increasingly consolidating marketplace.
SAP users are promised to be able to import data from their excel spreadsheet into its business planning software. For Microsoft the partnership with SAP provides an appropriate way to the transaction process.
The companies said the product would enter the market in 2006, with a limited number of customers getting access in the fourth quarter of this year.
