The world’s largest passenger plane, the Airbus A380, took off successfully on its initial flight Wednesday starting new page in the Airbus’s fight U.S. with rival Boeing Co for the global aviation market.
The double-decker giant enjoyed its first four-hour flight above Airbus headquarters near Toulouse, in southern France.
With regard to its all innovative facilities, A380 is said to represent a revolutionary step in the airline industry.
The flight took 11-year preparations and €10 billion in spending to be realized.
Presenting the A380, with a catalogue price of $282 million, Airbus counts on the upswing of demand for bigger aircraft for passenger transportation between ever-busier hub airports.
But some analysts say that the recent increase in sales of smaller wide-body planes, like Boeing’s 787 "Dreamliner," shows a different tendency putting Airbus’s efforts at risk . Meanwhile, Airbus managed to sell 250 of the A380s while some experts say it needs to sell three times as many to make a profit.
Congratulating Airbus with a successfully passed test, Boeing spokesman also added: "In terms of the market it is likely to secure, our view remains unchanged and that is that the A380 is a very large aircraft for a very small market."
