Glaxo says its Paxil CR returns to market
(by Natali Novak)

The largest drugmaker for Europe GlaxoSmithKline Plc said its antidepressant Paxil CR may soon return to the market. The company also plans to get back its diabetes treatment Avandamet after the agreement with the US regulators on improving manufacturing of the drugs.

Earlier, the US Food and Drug Administration warned the company that if it does not change the way of manufacturing the drugs it may be fined for as much as $10 million. It allowed the drugs to return to the market after Glaxo agreed to comply with the ruling.

The FDA said the batches of two drugs were seized after it had found the manufacturing violations at the plant. That led to the fall in sales of Paxil, once the company’s leading drug, by almost 40%.

``In terms of market interpretation this is reasonably good news because most people expected the drugs to be off the market for some time. Our intention is to get the drugs back on the market by midyear,’’ said Glaxo spokesman Philip Thomson.
