EU, U.S. still in favour of peaceful Boeing-Airbus agreement
(by Julia Jenson)

The parties of the Airbus-Boeing subsidies dispute voiced Monday their mutual preference for a peaceful solution of the problem, as opposed to an open confrontation at the World Trade Organization. This is the outcome of the talks in Paris where U.S. Trade Representative Robert Portman and European Trade Commissioner Peter Mandelson broached the subject.

"On Airbus-Boeing, Mr Mandelson and Mr Portman agreed that a negotiated solution remained the most desirable option," said a statement released after the first meeting after Portman’s appointment.

"They agreed to continue their dialogue," reported the European Commission.

Although both sides have not complied with the deadline for cutting subsidies set for April 11, they nevertheless reiterated their readiness to bring them down affably in the near future. The lawsuits were suspended in January as both the US and the EU took measures to avert what threatened to become the largest-scale dispute in the WTO history. But in mid-March the negotiations came to a standstill, as Peter Mandelson and his then counterpart Robert Zoellick hung up in the middle of a heated discussion.
