Ivan, one of the strongest storms of the season with the winds of 150 mph, is moving towards Jamaica. Specialists wary it to become the third hurricane to hit Florida within a month.
The storm has already destroyed 90% of buildings on Grenada knocking all the utilities, though it has slowed from Category 5 storm to a Category 4 one. “You don’t get Category 5 storms very often. The last time we had a Category 5 storm in the Caribbean was Mitch in 1998.” said Richard Pasch, a hurricane specialist with the National Hurricane Center in Miami.
“If we’re lucky, it will head west and go into the gulf, but I wouldn’t bet on it,” said Robert Tuleya, an adjunct professor at Old Dominion University.
United Nations team was assembling in Jamaica to coordinate relief operations, and the World Health Organization as well as the Pan-American Health Organization sent emergency supplies to southern Haiti.
