Hurricanes continue striking U.S.

Hurricanes continue striking U.S.

(by Sh. Nakata)

A Category 2 hurricane Jeanne, which devastatively hit Haiti, now is moving towards Florida and may strike south-eastern coast of the U.S. in two days.

Jeanne may strengthen its winds in a couple of days and strike Florida with the winds of around 100 miles per hour. “A hurricane watch will likely be required for Florida later today,’’ said hurricane center in Miami.

Jeanne hit Haiti some days ago and took at least 1,000 lives with 1,200 missed while flooding Haiti coastal town Gonaives.

This is the forth hurricane to strike U.S. over six weeks. The first one was Hurricane Charley having taken 19 lives and costing insurers $6.5 billion. Frances and Ivan were not so devastating but also cost up to $6 billion to the insurers.

Jeanne’s eye exceeded 360 miles (around 580 km) to the east of Great Abaco Island of Bahamas and now is heading towards U.S. Florida. The hurricane can cause another wave of terrible damage with trees blown down and ocean waves exceed 2 meters, hurricane watchers note.
