Matsushita-Hitachi plasma deal in progress
(by Sh. Nakata)

Matsushita-Hitachi plasma deal in progress Matsushita and Hitachi reached an agreement on plasma display panel business on Monday. Sharp and Fujitsu also said they agreed to transfer the research, manufacturing and sales operations of Fujitsu LCD subsidiary to Sharp.

Now two electronic giants, Hitachi Ltd and Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. Ltd, will tie up in the research and marketing of plasma display panels, two companies reported in a statement. The deal is expected to help Japanese electronic device makers to survive as their Asian rivals with cheaper offerings become stronger.

The two companies also said they think plasma display panels are most suitable for slim, large-screen high-definition TVs.

The deal between Sharp Corp. and Fujitsu Ltd will allow the former to expand on LCD market and become No.1 rival to the LCD market leading company Samsung Electronics, improving earnings growth which has slowed in recent months.

The companies did not disclose the terms of the deal as the final agreement is expected to be worked out only in March.
