European shares closed lower on Monday.

The Dax Index fell 13.52. points, or 0.32% to 4262.18, the FTSE 100 Index was down 2.30 points, or 0.05% to 4884.20, the CAC 40 Index declined 6.91 points, or 0.17% to 4010.98.

In U.K.: Barclays Bank fell 0.09% to 538.50. Diageo declined 0.37 and closed at 805.0. HSBC rose 0.41 and closed at 865.50. Vodafone slipped 0.54% to 139.25. Unilever added 0.27% to 548.50. Shell fell 0.54% and closed at 462.0.

In France: Alcatel rallied 2.36% to 8.66. BNP Paribas closed unchanged at 53.85. EADS was up 0.37% and closed at 21.76. France Telecom added 0.83% to 23.08. Danone rose 0.93% to 75.75. Renault slid 0.81% to 67.35.
