Foreigners bought fewer US bonds and stocks in March indicating tough times for the country to fund its trade deficit with money borrowed abroad.
Net overall foreign purchases of American securities -- both bonds and stocks – amounted to $45.7 billion for the month, down by half from the previous two months, the Treasury Department said in its latest monthly report on net capital flows. The figure includes foreign purchases of US bonds and stocks and US purchases of foreign securities.
The latest developments on the bond-and-stock market shows no signs of stability, some analysts say.
The trend may have severe impact on the dollar, according to the traders with the possibility of higher rates and economy slowdown.
