War against democracy in Iraq rages on: Abu Musab al-Zarqawi
(by Dr. Goldfinger)

War against democracy in Iraq rages on: Abu Musab al-Zarqawi The last few weeks before the upcoming January 30 elections are marked with bloody oppositional actions from Sunni insurgents.

Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, the Jordanian wanted militant, vowed to wage a war in the countdown to election. “We have declared a bitter war against the principle of democracy and all those who seek to enact it,” said Zarqawi in an audio tape on the Internet.

A suicide bomber attacked the police checkpoint near the party office of Iraqi Prime Minister Iyad Allawi injuring seven policemen and three civilians. Mr Allawi was not in the western Baghdad at the time of explosion. The same checkpoint has recently been the target of the attack resulting in four people being killed and 25 wounded.

The list of the latest guerrilla attacks includes dozens of suicide bombings, the kidnap and murder of many and a murderous assault on the deputy governor of Diyala province. These events have raised fears of bloodshed during next Sunday’s election that will keep voters from the poll. Sunny guerrillas are trying to provoke civil war as well as to wreck the elections.

The Iraqi government takes security measures in the run-up to the election including the closure of airports, imposing of curfews and setting traffic bans.

Mr Allawi promised his U.S.-backed government would do its best to protect more than 5,000 polling stations.

“We are determined to do our best to put an end to the escalation of violence,” Allawi told the BBC.
