Pfizer, Microsoft team to beat medical spam

Microsoft Corp. and pharmaceutical giant Pfizer Inc. teamed up to fight against online medical fraud that may be risky for health.
The two companies will launch an investigation around what they call illegal sale of generic drugs and related email spam.
CanadianPharmacy (cndpharmacy.com) and E-Pharmacy Direct (myepharmacydirect.com), two internet pharmacies and the spammers who helped them to advertise doubtful drugs, are the targets for the investigation.
Pfizer filed lawsuits against these firms, but the investigation may turn difficult as both firms are bogus. CanadianPharmacy used a Montreal call centre to process orders. The orders were filled with Indian drugs, and mailed back to customers using a U.S. freight forwarding company. Whether those behind the operation are Canadian remains unclear because the supply chain implicates foreign firms too, said Pfizer general counsel Beth Levine. E-Pharmacy Direct has fewer connections to Canada, Pfizer officials say.
Pfizer became anxious about the amount of spam after its shareholders began complaining about the amount of spam touting Viagra.
