John Paul returns to Vatican
(by Natalie Novak)

John Paul returns to Vatican Pope John Paul left the hospital on Thursday after his 10-day stay due to breathing problems caused by influenza. As we reported earlier, the Pope of Rome was admitted to the hospital on February 1 with severe throat spasms.

When he was leaving hospital in his "popemobile" vehicle, patients, some of them wearing dressing gowns and slippers, lined the path and looked down from their balconies, trying to watch Pontiff’s departure. He waved to the crowds on the way to his apartment. The pope will send a letter of thanks to all those who helped him to recover.

Because of the disease, John Paul had to mark Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent, in his hospital room. It was the first time in his papacy that he had broken his traditional way of celebrating Ash Wednesday ceremonies in St Peter’s Basilica.

As a rule, the Pope has several public engagements during Lent, but this year the six weeks until Easter will be spent to recover his strength.
