NASA set shuttle launch day, May 15
(by Dr. Goldfinger)

Two years have passed since the loss of Columbia, and this Friday William F. Readdy, the NASA’s associate administrator for space operations together with other officials set the dated for launching the next space shuttle, May 15. Mr. Readdy assured that this time NASA would accomplish all necessary requirements of Columbia Accident Investigation Board by the end of the March. The oversight group has already cleared 7 of 15 mandatory pre-flight requirements. He told that "The vehicle can’t launch until all the paperwork is done. I know that sounds a little bit trivial, but documentation of each and every thing we do is very important."
On Thursday, the oversight panel approved NASA’s expectations to accomplish 7 of 15 mandatory recommendations.
First NASA was working with the shuttle Discovery in the International Space Station, planning to launch it in the period form May 15 to June 3. As the work was progressing, the launching date is set on May 15. "This date feels real good to me," mission’s launching director, Mr. Leinbach said.
The second target date is July 12, the second test mission of the revamped shuttle Atlantis, which is thought to be the emergency shuttle, ready to be launched as early as June 14 in case Discovery is damaged beyond repair on the initial flight and its crew has to remain in the space station.
