John Bolton, undersecretary of State, will represent the US at the United Nations. Political analysts say the move is rather unexpected.
He once said it wouldn’t matter if 10 stories of the U.N. headquarters vanished and the US is the only real authority in the world. "There is no such thing as the United Nations. There is an international community that occasionally can be led by the only real power left in the world, and that is the United States,” he said in a 1994 speech.
Bolton is a successor for John Danforth, a former senator and an ordained minister who is expected to take the direction of the assistant secretary. Political analysts note that the choice of George W. Bush is rather unexpected as he promised to cooperate with the United Nations before entered the office for the second time.
Bolton is expected to form new staff at the UN. Such candidates as Democratic Sen. John F. Kerry’s sister Margaret A. "Peggy" Kerry are included. Earlier Ms. Kerry worked as a civil servant for NGOs.
