Syrians demand the US to take its hands off Syria
(by Peter Van Bruggen)

Syrians demand the US to take its hands off Syria Yesterday Damascus witnessed tens of thousands people that took to the streets in an attempt to prove the whole world that Syria has nothing to do with the image of a terrorist nation widely promoted by the US.

People were chanting pro-Syrian and anti-US slogans demanding the US to stop suppressing it with unjust accusations.

The rally mostly consisting of young people marched more than a mile to the residence of Syria’s President Bashar Assad. Mr. Assad waved to his supporters from the balcony.

Earlier this week, Lebanese pro-Syrian president Emile Lahoud asked Syria-backed prime minister to form a new government – the move that made the anti-Syria opposition angry.

The opposition blamed Syria and Lebanon’s pro-Syrian government for the assassination of the former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri who led the opposition since October, 2004. Neither the Lebanese government, nor Syria claimed responsibility for the killing.

Guerrilla group Hizbollah organized a rally in Lebanon that supported Syria and is considered to be the biggest one since Hariri’s assassination on February 14. Hizbollah group received the biggest ever support from the rally. "Hizbollah draws largest crowd ’in gratitude to Syria’," said the opposition daily An-Nahar.
