China's National People's Congress (NPC), ratified Monday the anti-secession law to set a legislative basis for combating Taiwan's independence. The law is supposed to promote peaceful reunification of the nation.
China's President Hu Jintao signed an order sanctioning immediate promulgation of the new law on Monday, with law coming into effect after promulgation.
The law explores the nature of the the Taiwan problem, and calls for a peaceful resolution of the problem, while envisaging more severe means to stop Taiwan's secession from the US.
The bill provoked anxiety in the international community as many were worried about the possible ensuing war between Taiwan and China. China's Prime Minister Wen Jiabao has already tried to reassure the concerned saying that the bill is not a license to war.
