Washington State Department on Monday supported Beijing’s Anti-Secession Law.
In fact, the day before the U.S defines the law’s passage as "unfortunate".
The newly adopted law got 2,896 votes and reflects the common wishes of all Chinese people, with Taiwan compatriots and overseas Chinese included.
"The decision by the Chinese leaders to have the National People’s Congress adopt an anti-secession law is unfortunate. It really does not serve the cause of peace and stability on the Taiwan Strait, and for that reason, we believe it to be unhelpful," said the State Department spokesman Richard Boucher.
"We oppose any attempts to determine the future of Taiwan by other than peaceful means, and will continue to encourage both sides to engage in peaceful dialogue to solve their differences," he added.
The law is supposed to safeguard China’s core national interests, encourage peaceful reunification, and promote stability across the Taiwan Strait.
China’s National People’s Congress on Monday released the legislation signed into law by President Hu Jintao on Monday.
