Abuse cases drop after Ghraib scandal
(by Natali Novak)

US officials have reported Yesterday that U.S. militaries have commited homicide of more then twenty Iraq and Afghanistan detainees.

The US Army reported about 208 abuse cases between the U.S. intrusion of Iraq in March 2003 and May 2004, when the Abu Ghraib abuses made international news. The reports on abuse cases in April 2004 (25) included four deaths. The numbers declined in December when it was reported about six abuse cases. The Army data are complete through the end of 2004.

The Abu Ghraib scandal favoured the decline of deaths reported in battlefield detention facilities. From May 2003 to May 2004, 44 death cases were investigated, an average of more than 3.5 per month. Over the last seven months of 2004, 13 cases were investigated, an average of fewer than two per month.
