Truce announced by Palestinian factions
(by Olivia Cohen)

Truce announced by Palestinian factions The conditional truce between the Palestinian militant groups was announced Thursday after the meeting in Cairo.

In a statement issued Thursday, thirteen militant groups, including Hamas and Islamic Jihad, said they are ready for conditional truce being encouraged by the meeting in Egypt.

The move was called “positive” by the Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon. The next step, he said, is the disarming of the militants. "The terrorist organisations cannot continue to exist as armed groups and certainly not as terrorist organisations," he told President Hosni Mubarak of Egypt.

The Hamas official Mohammad Nazzal said: "What was agreed upon today is calm until the end of this year as a maximum period of time in exchange for an Israeli commitment to withdrawal from cities and [to] release prisoners."
