Fisher to get Iceland citizenship and escape US charges
(by Tash Koon)

Japan’s Justice Ministry reported on Wednesday that the former world chess champion Bobby Fischer wanted in US was on Monday given Kyodo Iceland citizenship in order not to be deported.

Fischer is accused of violating sanctions imposed on the former Yugoslavia by playing an exhibition chess match against Soviet Union’s Boris Spassky in 1992.

Match 1992 Fischer beat Spassky and pocketed $3 million and did not resurface until the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks in the United States.

"We would like Mr. Fischer to return to the United States so that the charges that have been filed against him can be properly addressed through our legal system," said Linda Hartley, spokeswoman for the U.S. embassy in Iceland’s capital of Reykjavik.
