Kyrgyz President Askar Akayev seems to have taken the situation in Bishkek under control as riot police swept the opposition from the streets of Kyrgyz capital.
The opposition demands the resignation of Askar Akayev and the cancellation of parliamentary elections results where pro-power deputies won the majority of seats in the parliament that were held February 27 and March 13. The opposition leaders claimed massive fraud during the elections.
Massive rallies in the streets of southern cities of Kyrgyzstan quikly spread all over the country. On Tuesday, people of the northern Tallas region took to the streets chanting «Akayev go!» slogans. Earlier this week people from Tallas demanded the ouster for the government, the Central Election Commission and the Supreme Court.
Kyrgyz president Askar Akayev said Monday that the Central Election Commission and the Supreme Court will conduct an exhaustive probe over the possible fraud in the elections where the majority comprised neutral and pro-power deputies.
Nineteen out of 71 deputies of the new parliament are from the pro-power political party called «Alga, Kyrgyzstan!», including the president’s daughter Bermet Akayeva. Five deputies belong to another pro-power party «Adilet».
On Wednesday, Kyrgyz prime minister Nikolay Tanaev said he would visit the south of the country to control the situation in the most rebellious regions. He will try to negotiate with the opposition that took the power over the country’s second-largest city of Osh. «All political issues must be resolved through negotiations», he said.
