China to bring North Korea back to six-party dialogue

China is thought to be the only country that can bring North Korea back to the six-party dialogue.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Jianchao said Thursday that North Korea still commits to the process but
that "deep distrust" between Pyongyang and the United States remained the key stumbling block.

"From this visit no breakthrough has been made on when the six-party talks can be resumed. We hope the two sides have patience, exercise restraint and do something constructive to reopen the process," Liu said of the United States and North Korea.

"The two sides will have consultations for the concrete arrangements of the visit," he said.

North Korea lays down conditions for U.S. to apologise for claiming that Pyongyang is "an outpost of tyranny" before resuming negotiations. It declared last month it had nuclear weapons.
