Akayev’s so-called ouster is a serious violation of Kyrgyz Constitution as he has not stepped down as the President of Kyrgyzstan, Kyrgyz Embassy in the US senior official said.
The country’s opposition has forced the government to step down, Kyrgyz Embassador in the USA Baktybek Abdrysayev said. The switch in the government was called a coup d-etat. He also added that he does not know where Akayev is now. But Mr. Abdrysayev supposed that the country’s president may now be with the friends he can trust.
Akayev’s jet was seen landing in Kazakhstan, not far from the city of Alma-Ata, some sources close to the matter say. Kyrgyz officials neither denied nor confirmed the information.
Russia’s President Vladimir Putin said Friday he would be glad to meet Askar Akayev in Russia if he is willing to come. Putin also added that the latest developments in Kyrgyzstan did not suprize him. «It was not a surprize for us,» he said. «I feel sorry it is not the first time political issues are resolved by force and anticonstitutional methods, with massacre and victims.»
Opposition leader Kurmanbek Bakiyev was appointed by Kyrgyz deputies as both acting president and prime minister on Friday.
Two people were reported killed and some 100 other wounded as a result of clashes in the country’s capital Bishkek, according to police sources. Some shopping malls were robbed by the night prowlers.
One of the acting opposition leaders Felix Kulov was released from the jail on Thursday. He said that restoring order in the country is the first priority for new government.
