Pope's blessing for Easter Sunday cheered crowds of faithful
(by Olivia Cohen)

Pope's blessing for Easter Sunday cheered crowds of faithful The crowds of people were happy to see the Pope that was trying to give his blessing to the crowd from his window shortly after the service was over.

People were really upset that the ailing pontiff failed to be available for the service and only managed to say a couple of words from the window of his apartment.

John Paul, 84, is slowly recovering from the surgery on his throat he underwent in February that made him unable to speak for a couple of days. He also suffers from Parkinson disease that is another obstacle for his speech.

This is the first time since John Paul assumed the papacy in 1978 that he does not serve Easter Sunday Mass at the Vatican.

The Pope last spoke to the public on March 13.

"What the pope has shown the world during the last few days is very powerful and touching. He does not hide his suffering and pain, but through it teaches us and speaks to us," said Cardinal Jozef Glemp.
