Putin invokes tax justice and order
(by Helen Snow)

Russian President Vladimir Putin invoked the government Monday to work out a legal reform package that would put an end to shadow privatization deals of the 1990s and put in order tax administration.

Putin’s last week’s meeting with big business leaders when he confirmed his support for the reduction of privatizations investigation period seems to be the first step to changes in economic climate.

"Everything we spoke about at this meeting must be implemented," Putin told ministers Monday in a session broadcast by state-owned television. "I request that the government implement this in a short period."

Speaking about tax legislation, Putin admitted that business leaders had "quite a few justified complaints" about the actions of fiscal authorities.

However, the government once and again has legitimated the Yukos case as a just punishment for illegal activities.
