Last night an 8.7 magnitude earthquake on the Indonesian island of Nias took lives of more than 1,000 people. Panic was sparked across the Indian Ocean region, still traumatised by the Boxing.
Today the rescue groups pulled out 330 bodies from the debris of collapsed buildings.
The two main island cities Gunungsitoli and Teluk Dalam are significantly damaged.
"It is predicted — and it’s still a rough estimate — that the number of the victims of dead may be between 1,000 and 2,000," says Vice President Jusuf Kalla.
"It’s difficult to get information. All the government officials have run to the hills because they are afraid of a tsunami," the Indonesia president, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono’s envoy said.
"Hundreds of buildings have been damaged or have collapsed," said Agus Mendrofa, the island’s deputy district head.
"The devastation is obvious as soon as you land," said Alessandra Boas, a member of an Oxfam International aid team . "Many of the houses here have collapsed, but it’s still too early for us to get a sense of the full scale of this."
"The army and navy are mobilising to help," said presidential adviser Tahi Bonar Silalahi.
