UN disaster teams landed in Indonesia to help survivors from the 8.7-magnitude quake that stroke the islands of the country.
The country’s island appeared in the epicenter of the disaster with the total death toll to grow rapidly, rescuers say. Now the death toll stays at 320, according to Indonesia’s National Coordinating Agency for Disaster and Refugee Handling.
"There are still a lot of victims under the ruins," said Nias deputy chief Agus Mendrofa, pointing at the possibility for number of victims to grow.
Indonesia’s government is reported to have mobilized three helicopters to search for survivors. It also provided rescuers with five light aircraft and three navy ships, the country’s officials say.
At least 1,000 people died in the earthquake that struck Indonesia shortly after the biggest disaster for the region that took lives of about 200,000 in December.
The small Banyak isles, a home for 10,000 people, evoked fears in doctors and rescuer teams as the island currently cannot be reached and that does not allow the people to get help from the doctors.
Still, doctors remain very careful in counting the dead, and before they saw the bodies people are regarded as missing.
