Canada and EU retort against US Byrd amendment
(by Helen Snow)

The Canadian government Thursday said it will raise a 15% surtax on some U.S. products like cigarettes, oysters and live swine. The surtax which will amount to $11.6 million this year is a Canadian respose to U.S. trade measure known as the Byrd amendment .

The Byrd amendment allows American companies to keep the profit that government gains from anti-dumping campaigns. Canada amid other countries is protesting this act which the World Trade Organization has considered as illegal.

Both Canada and the EU have made great efforts urging Washington to rescind the Byrd amendment.

The announcement of the surtax followed the European Union’s decision to take a similar measure.
“For the last four years, Canada and a number of other countries have repeatedly urged the United States to repeal the Byrd amendment," Canadian International Trade Minister Jim Peterson said in a statement Thursday.

The Canadian sanctions are to come into force by May 1.
