China is considering the possibility of resuming peace talks with self-ruling Taiwan, a Communist Party official said during the meeting with the Taiwan Nationalist Party leader on Thursday.
This is the first high-ranked meeting since the Chinese civil war when Taiwan declared independence from the mainland China.
Jia Qinglin, a senior party official, said the Nationalist Party of Taiwan chairman, Lien Chan, is invited to visit the mainland China any time in an attempt to end China’s hostile policy towards Taiwan and resume talks between the countries that have different views on Taiwan status.
Mr. Jia repeated once again China’s position on Taiwan’s status as part of «one China.» The position was hardened three weeks ago when China adopted a law authorizing the use of force against the island in case its government strives for formal independence. The move evoked mass rally in Taipei, the capital of Taiwan.
But the «one China» proposal was fiercely rejected by Taiwan’s President Chen Shui-bian. He accused the Nationalist Party of «trying to divide Taiwanese people» after the law adoption. Nationalists deny all accusations saying they do their best to solve the problem that emerged after 1949.
China has about 700 missiles aimed at Taiwan since 1999, when the two countries failed to set peaceful relations.
