Pope John Paul’s health state became "very grave"

Pope John Paul’s health state became "very grave" Pope John Paul II is in a "very grave" condition after having heart attack this morning, the Vatican has said.

"Yesterday afternoon ... following a urinary infection, a state of septic shock and cardio-circulatory collapse set in," the Vatican’s statement adds.

But the 84-year-old Pontiff is conscious and managed to take part in Mass this morning at his Vatican apartment.

The Pontiff has refused to go to hospital and is receiving medical treatment in his rooms.

The Vatican’s statement confirmed previous information that the last sacrament has been administered for the Pope yesterday evening.
