Kurdish leader named as new Iraqi president

Iraqi National Assembly announced Wednesday that Jalal al-Talabani, Kurdish leader, the state’s new president in the intervening period.

The first and second vice presidents were also named: the Finance Minister in power Adel Abdul Mahdi, a Shiite, and the outgoing President Ghazi al-Yawar, a Sunni Arab.

"The president is a Kurd, the former president becomes the vice president, and what do you want more for the democracy in Iraq?" said Hachim al-Hassani, parliament speaker.

"I promise I will spare no effort in achieving the goals of the Iraqi people... and carrying out the Iraqi duties without sectarian or racial differences," declared the newly-elected president.

Wednesday, parliamentary session gave 90% of all votes to the so called «Presidential Council» that unites the three presidents.
