During the Geneva meeting UN Secretary General Kofi Annan indicted the UN Human Rights Commission of being absolutely inefficient in human rights’ upholding. From this standpoint Secretary General proposed to set a new permanent body.
The body’s member nations such as Sudan, Zimbabwe, China, Russia and Saudi Arabia are accused of rights abuses; they were too concerned with protecting only their national interests.
’’ Unless we re-make our human rights machinery, we may be unable to renew public confidence in the United Nations itself,’’ Kofi Annan.
"We have reached a point at which the commission’s declining credibility has cast a shadow on the reputation of the United Nations system," Mr Annan also said.
