New steps to investigate Hariri’s killing
(by Tash Koon)

The United States and France expect Lebanese government to cooperate in a new international investigation of the former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri murder. The council "wants the truth to be established."

Two weeks ago a U.N. fact-finding team, led by deputy Irish police commissioner Peter Fitzgerald, released a report saying that a Lebanese investigation was puzzled with gaps and didn’t completely meet international standards.

Hariri was killed Feb. 14 in a bombing in Beirut. This case led to an upheaval in Lebanon and massive anti-Syrian demonstrations.

"We want to get to the bottom of this assassination and what we believe to be a terrorist act," U.S. deputy ambassador Stuart Holliday said. "Lebanon has indicated they will cooperate. We expect them to hold to their word, and that includes all aspects of the government of Lebanon."

France’s U.N. Ambassador Jean-Marc de La Sabliere told reporters that Thursday’s unanimous Security Council approval of a resolution authorizing the investigation underlined how strongly the council "wants the truth to be established."
