Bush-Sharon discussions over settlement problem
(by Tash Koon)

Bush-Sharon discussions over settlement problem President Bush has opened a session with Israel’s Prime Minister Ariel Sharon concerning an urgent question of Israel’s settlements in Palestinian territories. Sharon hopes for US support in his so-called Disengagement Plan that implies illegal Jewish settlements’ evacuation from the Gaza Strip and a part of the West Bank.

As a result of discussions Israel is expected to remove all 21 Gaza Strip settlements and four in the West Bank by the end of this summer. Sharon’s proposition to add 3,650 homes to the West Bank’s largest settlement, Maaleh Adumim was objected to as this could cut off Arab neighborhoods in Jerusalem from the other parts of the West Bank.

The United States insists on cessation of any construction in that areas. Bush argued his decline by stating that such activities threaten peace with the Palestinians and violate the internationally backed "road map" peace plan that calls for a settlement freeze.

"What I say publicly, I say privately. And that is, the ’road map’ has clear obligations on settlements and that we expect the prime minister to adhere to those road map obligations," Bush said.
