Cardinals prepare to Conclave

This week is the last for the Roman Catholic cardinals to announce the name of a successor to John Paul II. During their preparatory meetings, known as "general congregations", cardinals came across great difficulties in choosing an appropriate person among their ranks as the Catholic Church is deeply divided.

April 18 will be the conclusive day when 115 of those cardinals will enter the conclave to vote for a new pope facing the 1.1 billion members of Roman Catholic Church.

During one of the memorial Masses held since the funeral Rome Cardinal Camillo Ruini said John Paul had been able to "unite nations and avoid a clash of civilizations."

This and other appreciations are aimed to define the qualities the next pope should possess.

"Cardinal (Joseph) Ratzinger is trying to run the pre-conclave period like he runs the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. Catholic lay people have a right to know what’s going on," said Andrew Greeley, sociologist and religious affairs commentator from Chicago.
