The one-day visit of Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice’s top deputy, Robert Zoellick, to Baghdad Wednesday, following a trip to Iraq by Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld on Tuesday, caused the series of aggressive attacks against civilians, police and officials.
Near Kirkuk, nine policemen trying to dismantle an apparent bomb were killed by explosion Wednesday, police said. Three others were injured.
The Insurgents attacked the U.S. convoy damaging two government SUVs and five civilian cars, the U.S. military said. There is no information available about the victims. Al-Qaida in Iraq claimed responsibility.
A car explosure wounded Gen. Naji Saub Hussein of the Ministry of Interior and his driver, a ministry spokesman said. Both men were taken to hospital in critical state.
Another explosure took place on the highway to Baghdad International Airport, wounding four people and setting six cars on fire.
The violance was opened by a suicide car attack near an American convoy in Mosul on Tuesday. The attack killed four Iraqis and wounded at least seven.
The attack foolowed the Iraqi government’s announcement of the capture of Fadhil Ibrahim Mahmoud al-Mashadani, a former official in Saddam Hussein’s government. Mashadani is accused of being an architect and investor of insurgent attacks. He was captured Tuesday on a farm northeast of Baghdad, Iraqi officials said in a statement.
