Japanese gas companies allowed to test drill in East China Sea: deepened dispute with China
(by Sh.Nakata)

Japanese gas companies allowed to test drill in East China Sea: deepened dispute with China Japanese gas companies were allowed by the government to test drill in a disputed area of the East China Sea, a move that will do no good in the tough relations between Japan and China over the issue.

Application reviewing from the companies that are eager to explore deep-sea natural-gas fields is scheduled for later Wednesday, Japan’s officials said.

The gas deposits are claimed both by China and Japan. The move is likely to worsen the situation after anti-Japan demonstrations in several Chinese cities over the weekend.

Japan denies the links between the demonstration and test drilling. "It’s only a procedure, we will handle it in an orderly manner," said Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi.

Chinese exploration of the fields was protested by the Japanese government several times as the drilling is extended to Tokyo’s exclusive economic zone, according to Japanese officials.

China declined to comment on the issue.
