Berlusconi struggles to regain power

Italian leader Silvio Berlusconi was pushed into resignation on Wednesday by a steady fall in voter support being blamed with Italy’s economic downfall. His resignation has been also determined by a serious split in the coalition.

Despite all the criticism against his actions, Berlusconi expressed confidence in his ability to present Italy with a new government listed by Friday.

"I will be ready with the list (of ministers) ... as early as tomorrow," Berlusconi told reporters.

However, this is evident that the splitted coalition doesn’t seem to easily admit a new balance of power.

President Carlo Azeglio Ciampi will decide if Berlusconi is provided by the necessary parliamentary support to regain the power after having consulted party leaders of opposed political spectrum on Friday.

If Berlusconi fails to confirm his overall support, Ciampi will have to call a special national election. In this case, the media tycoon’s center-right coalition is supposed to lose as opinion polls suggest the centre-left opposition, led by Romano Prodi, former European Commission president, will be a favourite of the elections.
